We proceeded down the trail and encountered several rocky areas that made it more than challenging for some. Others scouted the trail ahead and reported back the best path to take. At one point, the path took us up a very tall rock wall with small crevices for toe holds and finger grips. As we discussed whether to attempt it or turn back a group of hikers coming the other direction came down the wall with a large dog (we found out later it was seven years old). Not to be outdone by the dog, we agreed to attempt the climb. Mike assisted Pat and guided her up the wall with a push or two from behind. What a feeling of accomplishment, not just for ourselves, but for Pat who overcame her fears and succeeded in reaching the rocky summit.
When we reached a bailout path back to the Canal trail, we took it. Mike promised Joe to bring him back another time to explore the remaining part of the Billy Goat Trail. Pat led the way through the woods back to the C&O trail for a much less strenuous return walk to the parking lot. It was a great experience and one that created another warm memory of being with family.
