Stash Assessment

Do you ever feel the need to just go shopping? I had that feeling yesterday, but something stopped me. I had homework to do.

My homework involved working with my fabric....finally. We were supposed to go through our collection of fabrics and pull the fabrics that were solid in color or a small print that looked like a solid. We could also pull hand-dyes and batiks or just go shopping if we didn't have any of these! We were to cut 2" squares of each to use for our homework assignment.

About 12 years ago, I attended a class with Jenny Byer. I learned the importance of working with solids or prints that looked like solids from her. So what do you think I've been purchasing since then? duh.... so the homework assignment is daunting. I pulled out all of my batiks and some hand-dyes. I don't think I need to go shopping, but it did point out some serious gaps in my collection of fabric....reds and pinks.....I don't have much of either one. Wow! this exercise did point out the color I like best....or have the most of. Interesting. This has been an important lesson and one I haven't given much thought to lately. I seemed to have drifted to creating art quilts using new techniques and leaving out one of the most basic concepts of quilting.....choosing colors wisely!

Gotta go now. I have some serious cutting to do!
