Local Treasure

I live not far from Mt. Vernon, George Washington's home. I met my local quitl guild friends for lunch at the restaurant there the other day. Afterwards I did my annual Christmas shopping in the the gift shoppe....Mt Vernon Christmas Ornaments. I always buy one for me and one for a lifelong friend. The other day I discovered that they also sell flour and pancake mix from the local Grist Mill.

 

So I purchased a sack of pancake mix. Interesting that the pancake mix was packaged in a real muslin bag and was not in any sort of plastic bag.  I made the pancakes using the recipe that came with the mix and they were yummy. The recipe did not indicate how many servings it made and it turned out it was probably for two people. So the pancakes are a little small since I had to feed three. These pancakes are made the old fashioned way (duhhhh!) with baking powder, and brown sugar added to the mix....it was little more that I was prepared to do Saturday morning, but it was worth it.

I highly recommend you try this if you're given the opportunity to shop at Mt. Vernon, or any other place that sells freshly ground wheat. It might be added to my annual tradition of purchases there.
