Arts and Old Lace Challenge and a Field Trip

I agreed to participate in an art quilt challenge last fall. We were again given men's suit and shirt samples (like last year's Power Suit Challenge) along with some antique lace lengths and buttons. The finished size of the quilt is supposed to be 18" X 18".

I've had a number of ideas but nothing really got me beyond the sketchbook. Yesterday, I had a breakthrough of how to depict this challenge. Although I can't reveal it here, I'll just say that it will include some family art and old lace and maybe a man's tie or two. I'm so happy that I decided on this theme. Sometimes the muse appears when you least expect it. And I'm glad mine manifested itself before the deadline passed.

My Thursday quilt group went on a field trip Thursday. We all had 50% coupons to use at Joann's Fabrics so that was the first stop. Although I don't buy fabric at Joann's, I can always find a notion or two to buy with a coupon. Then we went over to the Dewberry Life with Cancer Center to view the quilts that Quilter's Unlimited has on display. It was nice to be able to read the artist statement for each quilt and to view each one up close. Barbara Dove and I are representing the Mt Vernon Chapter of QU with eight quilts in this exhibit. The exhibit will be on display through the end of April, it is free, and the public is invited to see it. Unfortunately, the Center is closed on the weekends. The final stop of our field trip was for lunch at the German Bakery in the Ravensworth Shopping Center. If you've never been there, you are missing something wonderful. Thanks, Gail, for putting this outing together and doing all of the driving. I think I speak for all of us when I say it was a wonderful outing. Let's do it again sometime.
