Potomac Nationals Baseball Game

I took my grandson (11 year-old) and two friends to Potomac Nationals Baseball game yesterday. The Nationals are the Single A team for the Washington Nationals baseball team. We took our seats in the Grand Stand--we were the only ones sitting there, and proceeded to watch the National pitchers warm up in the Bull Pen pre-game. The boys were sooooo excited to get the autographs of the pitchers. One had them sign his new "Nationals" baseball cap and the other two had them sign baseballs that are now in their trophy cases at home.

The surprise of the day came after the game. The boys wanted more autographs so we hung around the doors of the locker room in hopes of getting signatures before players left the stadium. We waited and waited and waited for the players to come out. When one finally did, one of the kids asked why it was taking so long for the players to come out. He said it was probably because Stephen Strasburg was there to practice. What??? Did I hear right? Stephen Strasburg was there? In case you don't know who he is, he is the Washington National pitcher who was injured last year and had Tommy John elbow surgery. He is slowly coming back and hopefully, he will re-join the Washington team in the fall.

We walked back out to the baseball field and yes, there he was, Stephen Strasburg, throwing pitch after pitch after pitch. You know the boys did NOT want to leave. Fortunately, or unfortunately, they were due to be at their OWN baseball practice later and I was able to convince them it was time to leave. I enjoyed hearing the boys talk about their experience in the car ride home.

Who says older generations don't have anything in common with the younger ones? I had a great time with the boys and it meant more to me to spend the day with them than they'll ever know.
