End of Summer Picnic
I attended an end of summer family picnic on Saturday. It was my sister, Maureen, who came up with the idea. We met in a park that was in the neighborhood where we were raised in Arlington, Virginia. The creek was still there, the picnic shelters were still there, the walking paths were still there as were the bathrooms--with running water! It was nice to re-visit one of my favorite childhood places and being able to share it with nieces and nephews, and yes, even a GRAND-nephew.
We wandered through the neighborhood for a walk and yes, even went back to the street where so many memories were created. The hill I used to sled down was covered with bushy growth, the creek was smaller, the trees were bigger, and some of the houses on our street had been rebuilt. But our old house was still there, looking just about the same as it did 55 years ago!
We stopped at a corner where we used to meet our dad when he arrived home from work. Sometimes we walked with him those last two blocks after his carpool dropped him off and other times we hopped in the car to ride home with him.
Thanks to everyone who made the effort to come to the picnic and to those who live too far away, don't worry, your presence was felt as we made our way down the treed paths.
